Four Ways to Treat Dry Scalp at Home

Many Filipinos experience having dry and flaky scalp for several reasons. For more serious conditions, it’s best to visit your dermatologist and see if there is an underlying cause.

But for those with mild drying and flaky scalps, here are a few solutions you can try at home to treat your scalp and hair.

Essential Oils

One reason your scalp is dry and flaky is possibly because your scalp isn’t getting the right amount of moisture it needs. As a result, your scalp’s skin cells are dying and turning into flakes and dandruff. Having dry skin cells in your scalp make a good breeding environment for bacteria, so essential oils not only moisturize but also cleanse your scalp and help treat the symptoms caused by dry scalps.

A few essential oils you can try include tea tree oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, Argan oil, and coconut oil, which you can find in your local drugstore or online. However, some essential oils are too strong to use on its own, so be sure to dilute it before applying to your scalp.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera not only soothes skin irritation (a common effect of drying scalp), but it also moisturizes your scalp and nourishes it, treating the dryness. A two-in-one solution from this very versatile plant. Massage it onto your scalp and leave on for 15 minutes before washing it off.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has been associated with a number of health benefits, including treating dry scalps. It’s believed that its acidity can help to shed dead skin cells on the scalp, bringing forward the healthier new cells that aren’t dry. Its acidity can also balance out your skin’s acidic levels, preventing the growth of fungi and bacteria that can lead to dandruff.

Pure apple cider vinegar is too strong for your skin and hair, so dilute it before using. Mix one cup of apple cider to two cups of water and apply directly to your scalp. Let it sit for no more than 10 minutes before washing off the mixture with a mild shampoo and conditioner.
